Create a Climate-Safe Future: Youth Art Competition design and consultation for Tasmanian Conservation Trust

New Art Competition for Young Tasmanians to Imagine and visualise a climate-safe future for our island open for entries.

15-25 year old Tasmanians have the opportunity to be paid for their imagination and art in a newly launched art competition where young people are invited to: Imagine, visualise and communicate a climate-safe Lutruwita/Tasmania 40 years from now, what does it look like?

The Tasmanian Conservation Trust, Sustainable Living Tasmania’s Youth Climate Leaders Program and the Environment Society, in collaboration with artist Bohie Blackwood and with the support of the City of Hobart are running a competition for young Tasmanians to imagine, draw, paint, or design a climate-safe future and put it on a poster. Research published by the University of Tasmania shows that the ongoing and escalating climate disasters has led to increasing climate anxiety in young people, which has had adverse impacts on their mental health, wellbeing and safety. This competition is an opportunity and outlet for creative young Tasmanians to communicate their hopes, ideas and vision for Lutruwita/Tasmania’s future.

Four very special guest judges will choose the top 10 finalists to be shown in a public exhibition at Moonah Arts Centre on 23rd October 2026. Guest judges include Hannah Maloney, Josh Pringle from Keep Tassie Wild, Jillian Mundy and Bohie Blackwood. 

Across two categories there will be cash and voucher prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and a category award sponsored by Fullers Bookshop, Nolan Art gallery, Red Parka and Vibrance Projects. First prize in each category will receive $300 thanks to Fullers Bookshop. 

As a part of the competition we are offering free in-class workshops for schools and/or youth centres. This is aimed at kickstarting students' entries into the Climate-Safe Future poster competition and is designed to prompt student conversation and big picture thinking.

This competition represents an amazing opportunity for young Tasmanians to connect with and share their visions for the future through creative and innovative thinking.

BOHIE

Based in Braidwood, NSW, BOHIE creates art, illustration, public space murals, and creative workshopping experiences that explore wonder and connection to each other and to the natural world.

She works alongside educational institutions, government agencies, community focus groups and stewards of the natural world to design change-making campaigns for each creative project. Bohie utilises a research-based methodology to find inspiration for her artworks, resulting in 2D images which are laden with deeper stories and symbolic meaning.

This narrative driven conceptual development injects her unique authenticity and grass-roots integrity into the public arena, which she sees as a conscious challenge to public advertising. In a time of rapid change, extreme instability and a globally recognised feeling of imminent threat, Bohie’s art provides messages of hope and empowerment for a changed future.
